To address some of the common complaints I have seen about these bags:
- durability: I have never had a bag leak or break. I sometimes fill them all the way to the top, sometimes I only fill up halfway. I sometimes freeze the bags, I sometimes leave them in the fridge. I sometimes put them in hot water to thaw, sometimes them them thaw in the fridge or on the counter. Never have I had any problems.
- size: I like that I can only put 5oz in the bag. The smaller size (compared to some other bags) means that I don't feel like I need to fill a huge bag for fear of wasting a bunch of space I have paid for. Because when I thaw milk sometimes I only want a few ounces. If I only had huge bags I would need to thaw large amounts of milk, and then waste that milk. I prefer smaller bags that I can thaw smaller amounts and therefore waste less. Also, smaller bags make it easier for me to organize in the freezer. I can fit them into smaller spaces and gives me more flexibility. If I want to freeze a lot of milk then I use more than 1 bag and then thaw more than 1 bag. That to me is not a hassle. Two small bags to me are the same as 1 big bag.
- ease of use: they are so easy. You can pump into them directly, or, you can pump into a bottle and then pour the milk into the bag. That is actually what I prefer. But both ways work.
- measurements: yes, the ounce markings on the bag are not perfect. But medela warns about that. A bag that opens large on the bottom, and then narrows on top, means that the ounce markings will not be perfect. They are an estimate. I never had this be an issue, it is not like I need exact 1/4 ounce measurements. My baby drinks 2 ounces one time, then 5 ounces the next, and it is never predictable. Just like breastfeeding. So I'm not worried about exact exact measurements.
- storage: I find these realyl easy to store. Again, the smaller size to me means that I have more flexibility when placing them in the freezer because I am not trying to make a large frozen bag fit into a tiny space.
Bottom line: I totally recommend these bags. You can't go wrong with medela for breastfeeding gear.
I began using these bags when trying to build up a "freezer stash" of breastmilk before I returned to work after just 6 weeks of maternity leave. It totally sucked (no pun intended) that I only had that little bit of time off, as I could tell that my body was still getting adjusted to nursing my newborn baby. As a first-time Mom, this was a steep learning curve for me, the baby, and my body. The first few week (weeks 1-4) I didn't even worry about pumping milk, I just focused on feeding my baby at my breast to keep up with her demand and ensure she kept gaining weight. She did, so that was fine. Then, during week 4, I realized that I'd have to get her accustomed to drinking milk from a bottle. There were 3 full days of resistance on her part, but we made it through. As soon as she accepted both the bottle AND the breast, I was confident that I could then try to begin pumping milk on one side (for my "Freezer Stash") and feeding the baby on the other. After all, I was running out of time when it came to building a stash and having separate nursing sessions for the baby, and pumping sessions for storing breastmilk wasn't going to work for me.
Initially, the trouble with that was the Medela bottle that I was pumping into (on one side) kept getting in the way while I was trying to nurse my baby (using the football hold, AND the cradle hold) on the other. These flexible, yet durable bags totally solved that problem as I was able to attach them to my pump part and it didn't get in the way of the baby whom I was holding on the other side! SUCCESS!
Best of all, when I was done I simply closed the bag off using that secure closure at the top and sat it on the table, upright, until I was finished nursing my baby. I like the convenience and durability of the bags since they don't take up space in the bag that holds my pump + pump parts AND when in use, you don't have to worry about them getting in the way of things or losing the cap--like you would with a bottle that requires storage. When I'm ready to pour the milk into the bottle for her consumption, I simply set the bag in warm water to let it thaw out before pouring it into a Medela baby bottle. Very easy.

I tried the kiinde bags, which were super convenient, but incredibly inaccurate. I could fill up more than one bag on each breast on those, thinking I was some sort of Dairy Queen. If you pour those into a bottle though, your six ounces of liquid gold ends up being a little over 4. They are also pretty expensive.
I made the messy mistake of trying to rig the lanosil bags and quickly learned that you should never do that. Ever.
Then, I found these little bags. You have to make sure they are sealed up correctly, but I have to say, they rock. They freeze nicely, have a stand up bottom and come with the adapter for the breastshield. I keep a sharpie in my pump bag to write the date on the bag. Thawing the bag is super easy. I just pull what I need from the freezer the night before and it's mostly thawed by then. If I forget, I just run the bags under cool water until mostly thawed and transfer them to bottles.

Just remember that these need a special attachment to hook onto the pump.
