3. Play balloon tennis
A couple of balloons and some plastic plates will be enough to play balloon tennis with your toddlers. They will be engaged for a long time while the rain pelts down outside.
4. Paint pebbles and rocks
Collect smooth rocks and pebbles from the garden during summer because they will help to keep the toddlers busy during a rainy day.
Use either acrylic colors (or even just a few drops of food color in some water!) and paint these pebbles together with your kids.
5. Let them wash their toy cars
Toddlers will have plenty of water-tolerant toys like cars and dolls, and these get dirty quickly because they play with them all day.
It will be a good excuse to keep them busy on a rainy day by asking them to wash the cars with soapy water.
6. Photo scavenger hunt
This can help your kids learn to recognize people in your family photos and also keep them engaged on a rainy day.
Arrange for photo scavenger hunts early in the morning so that they can start right away after breakfast.
7. Build structures with plastic cups
Use some plastic cups to build simple structures with your toddlers. They will fail a lot of times but encourage them to keep building.
You can also make pom-pom shooters and tell them to knock the cups down with them.
8. Build them a den
Toddlers love their own den and they will be very happy when you build them one.
It will be their own little space where they can read books, have a snack or play with their toys on a rainy afternoon.
9. Making face magnets
Sometimes it is good to be silly and have your toddles join in!
When you have nothing to do on a rainy day, cut down eyes, noses, tongue, and teeth from old magazines and stick them on to magnets.
Your toddler can combine the eyes and noses to create funny faces and stick them on the fridge.
10. Help them to measure the falling rain
An easy way to engage your toddler and also help them learn something new is by measuring the rain with a rain gauge.
Take a cup or a mug and help the toddlers to measure the rain every now and then.
11. Splash in the puddles
If the rain is not too heavy, you can dress your toddler from head to toe in a raincoat and some boots and take them outside to splash in the puddles.
Who doesn’t love to splash in puddles?? Add an umbrella and make it super exciting!
12. Watch a movie together
Nothing beats snuggling up on the couch with a blanket and some treats to watch a movie? If you are lucky they might even let you nod off to sleep.
13. Arrange a tea-party with the toddlers
Toddlers love to arrange tea-parties, especially if their parents encourage them to. So, let them arrange a tea-party with a teapot, water and some cups. Put down some towels or a waterproof sheet and just let them go for it.
14. Marble racing
Make them a marble racing track with the help of pool noodles. They will definitely not get bored if it is raining outside with one of these set up!
15. Read them stories
A cloudy afternoon with rain pelting down on the windows is the perfect setting for toddlers to listen to stories. So, keep them busy by reading some of their favorite stories. Add a little background music and a warm fire and you’ll have an afternoon of fun.
To keep a toddler really busy on a rainy day, you, or another sibling will have to get involved. Toddlers generally don’t keep themselves busy for too long. But once they get a hand of these activities, they will not want to do anything else as soon as the rain hits your city.
