Should you eat super foods daily?

Just like anything in your diet, it is important to eat a whole range of foods. It would not be beneficially to your body to eat 10 bowls of kale a day with nothing else. Your body needs (and loves) a variety of foods.

If in doubt, try to eat the rainbow

You have probably heard this saying, and it is true. The plants are different colors due to the different nutrients within the plants. This is why when you eat a range of colors you can be assured that you are eating a large range of nutrients.

Our top picks of Super Foods

There are many important nutrients that your body requires to function. These can enter our bodies through a range of different foods. Some foods have more nutrients in them than others.

These are our pick of super foods. Some may seem unusual or normal to you depending on where you are in the world. However, we believe that nature really got it right with these foods:

Cacao

This is chocolate in its raw form. Please do not get this confused with cocoa powder (this is very different). Cacao grow in pods on a cacao tree.

Cocoa on the other hand, is a processed form of cacao and through the powdering process they actually take most of the nutrients out of the powder. Cacao can be brought in numerous ways such as nibs, butter, and cacao powder.

Chocolate has such a bad reputation however, it is actually the sugar that is not healthy for you, not the cacao. When chocolate is in its natural cacao form is actually very healthy for you.

(I know this is incredibly exciting! however, it does not mean that you can eat blocks and bars of chocolate – we are talking raw chocolate without sugar)

Flax seeds

Flax seeds are also known by the name Linseed. This little seed contains a large amount of nourishment. They can be very easily added to your diet through smoothies, or sprinkling them over salads.

To get the best health benefit out of these seeds you will need to crush them just before consuming to allow them to be in a state that your body can get the nutrients out of them.

We like these

Goji berries

This very sweet berry is a small bundle full of a number of key nutrients your body needs. These are usually brought in a dried form as it is difficult to source these fresh.

If you can source fresh berries, go for it! You can add 1-2 berries per serving of a smoothie to add a very natural sweetness to the smoothie.

Chia seeds

These are a very versatile little seed that can be eating in its raw form. They can also be added to liquids which allows the seed to swell into a gel like form which can be very beneficial to gut health.

Chia seed pudding is popular at the moment where chia seeds are added to coconut cream and berries as a gut supportive desert.

Avocado

This fruit is a very wonderful addition to any salad, smoothie, or side dish. It is a great natural source of healthy fat that can add fullness to your meals.

Camu Camu

This fruit is thought to be the fruit with the highest amount of vitamin C in the world. You would need to eat almost 30 oranges to get the same amount of vitamin C as one serving of these berries.

These berries are amazing! You can get them in powder form and add it to your smoothies – it does have an ‘acquired’ taste.

How to source these super foods

We highly recommend buying organic where possible when it comes to these super foods. Because these foods are mainly plant based products there is a risk of pesticides or man-made chemicals being added to products.

To get the best out of these super foods you are going to want to buy high quality products.

These can be brought fresh, dried, or in powder form from most health food shops. Of course some of these items can also be brought from your local farmers market or grocer. Better yet, some of these could be grown yourself!

To recap around these super foods

Foods are only super if you are having a variety of foods in your diet. Mix these super foods up, try them in different ways. Experiment with smoothies and how they can be added to give them a real boost.

There are also many foods that we may consider pretty 'normal' that actually are incredible nutrient dense and can really benefit your health. You might be eating super foods daily without even realizing it! #superfoods #naturalearthymama
