7 Simple Low Carb Snacks on the Go for Your Keto Diet

Everything you eat on a Ketogenic Diet needs to be extremely low carb. When I say low carb I mean your snacks contain virtually NO carbs. You typically keep your total intake of carbohydrates at under 30 grams per day (I stay at 16) on the Ketogenic diet.

Keeping easy to grab snacks that are high in fat and low in carbs like string cheese, olives, and satiating chocolate fat bombs available at all times is pertinent.

What is a Keto Diet anyways?

The Ketogenic Diet has recently gained traction as a phenomenal diet for weight loss as well as aiding or healing many diseases and disorders.

While a high fat low carb diet (HFLC) was originally created to combat seizure disorders. It’s been realized more recently that many people can actually benefit from following a Ketogenic diet plan.

In modern day society, especially in the Western world, we have made fat the enemy. Believing that consumption of fat will make you fat. But in reality it is much more likely that consuming processed foods will make you more unhealthy and fat (even and especially low fat varieties).

Healthy fats are necessary to the proper functioning of your body. Healthy fats are important for proper brain function, joint function, and more.  They are also much more satisfying and filling than their low-fat and fat-free counterparts that are loaded with added sugars and other additives in order to lower their calorie and fat content.

So what is Ketosis?

Ketosis is the term for when your metabolism entirely switches from how it typically funtions: from burning fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. Your body begins to break down the fat you eat, as well as that stored in your body for energy!

To remain in Ketosis you have to keep your carbohydrate level very low. So your body has no carbohydrates to convert into glucose for energy.

So having low carb snacks on the go is absolutely essential!

I have personally noticed that high fat low carb Keto food does keep me full longer. However, once hunger hits I am absolutely ravenous! You really don’t want to talk to me until I’ve eaten a satisfying Keto snack.

What are ACTUAL Keto Snacks?

What snacks can you possibly fit into a diet with only about 20 grams of carbs a day? To put that in perspective: 1 peanut butter and jelly sandwich or 1 typical fruit smoothie will knock you right out of Ketosis!

If you keep your carbs to about 7 grams each meal, that leaves almost no carbs left over for your snacks. Though keeping your carbs so low may sound easy, once you begin counting your macros (short for macronutrients) I assure you it is not.

After months of trying out the Keto diet, I’ve found priceless Keto snacks you will always want to keep on hand to ensure your diet sucess. These are your perfect low carb snacks on the go for your busy life!

Low Carb Keto Snacks to Keep on Hand at All Times

1. Hardboiled Eggs

1 egg only contains about 1/2 g of carbohydrates. Eggs are also extremely versitile. Keep a dozen hardboiled for a perfect low carb snack on the go! Omlettes, deviled eggs, poached, egg salad, you name it! Eggs are a wonderful affordable Keto snack.

On another note, Keto can also get really pricey also with all the meats, cheeses, and healthy fats you’re eating. Eggs are essential to following a budget while doing the Ketogenic diet.

2. Avocado

Avocados are high fat, very rich, and satisfying. They are perfect sliced and salted plain, added into a high fat low carb smoothie, or as a Keto guacamole using simply:

  • 2 mashed avocados
  • 4 tbsp. FULL FAT sour cream
  • sea salt (or Himalayan salt).
  • pepper

If you like a zesty guacamole spice with chili powder, cumin, onion powder, and garlic powder.

Keep in mind avocados are not carb free. 1 full avocado contains about 12 grams of carbohydrates. So aim for consuming about 1/4 of an avocado a day as a good Keto snack.

Also no chips on the keto diet! But you can dip bacon chips or easy to make Keto cheese chips in your guacamole:

  • Place small handfuls of shredded cheese on parchment paper
  • Bake 5-10 minutes at 200 degrees

3. String Cheese.

One of the best low carb snacks on the go is string cheese. It is easy and satisfying. Always keep a stash of string cheese around when you are following a Ketogenic Diet.

A typical package of string cheese only contains 1 g carbs, 6 g fat, and 8 g protein. Talk about a perfect Keto snack! Plus they are ready to grab and go anytime.

4. Fat Bombs

When browsing Pinterest before starting a Keto Diet, I didn’t understand the fat bomb craze. These mouthwatering desserts were make to seem absolutely essential to every Keto Diet.

After starting Keto, I can assure you, they are! When ommitting SO MANY of your typical foods and following such a restrictive diet, you NEED fat bombs! At least in my opinion.

There are seemingly endless varieties of fat bombs including chocolate peanut butter, chocolate blueberry cheesecake, raspberry cheesecake, pumpkin spice, and so much more!

5. Pork Rinds

We are all a bit addicted to crunchy and salty snacks. On the Keto diet almost all of these are forbidden! No chips, popcorn, and crackers; they are all loaded with carbohydrates.

Insert pork rinds. Salty, deep fried pork skin might not seem the most healthy, but it will satiate your cravings for salty and crunchy while staying within a Keto Diet.

(Keto tip: crushed up pork rinds make a phenomenal breadcrumb substitute!)

6. Seaweed

Dried roasted seaweed is one of my favorite snacks. It hits the same pleasure centers as the pork rinds by being low carb, crunchy, and salty.

No everyone likes dried roasted seaweed. But if you haven’t tried it yet, give it a try with an open mind. You might absolutely love this perfect low carb on the go snack!

7. Macadamia Nuts, Walnuts, and Brazil Nuts

A few delicious nut varieties are pretty low in carbohydrates. You definately cannot go overboard on nuts when trying to stay in a low carb count (which is ridiculously easy to do!).

But aiming for about 1 oz of either macadamia nuts, walnuts, or brazil nuts will only net about 3.9 g carbs. Keep a small bag of these nuts in the car for a great on the go low carb treat.

These 7 simple low carb snacks have you well on your way to Ketogenic Diet success.

Just remember to never leave home without a Keto snack on hand, so that you’re not tempted by tasty chips and granola bars when you’re hungrily staring at a vending machine!

High fat + low carb = sustained energy and feeling full longer
